Air Quality and Chemistry
Michael Caughey

Air Quality and ChemistryIn 1998 the USEPA announced new air quality standards for fine particles. These standards cover particulate matter (PM) less than 2.5 microns in diameter or "PM-2.5". Fine particles are readily inhaled into the lungs and are thought to be responsible for many of the adverse health effects of air pollution. The atmosphere is also an important source of many harmful chemicals to the environment. Water Survey research seeks to understand the sources and background levels of particulates and toxic chemicals.
